Well in 4th experiment with reforms "Sanaath" in orphanage atbaroda some positive results have started coming.
1) Mehul- the 11th class commerce student at the orphanage is financedby my very close friend Trinadh who is currently working in Amdocs InCyprus and now he has started his Tuition's. He is aiming to shape hiscareer as C.A. Moreover as a matter of gratitude he has promised methat on saturdays from 2-4 P.M. he would be teaching English to thejunior kids over there ( we would assist him during these classes).
2) Ajay-The most promising face which i had observed in that orphanage-the boy who is highly creative and good at designing clothes -- wastill date unable to come forward. On Saturday he came along with meand we purchased a good book of fashion Designing which he thoughtwould help him in shaping his career. I cant define the happinesswhich was present on his face after getting that book. I firmlybelieve this coming Saturday he would be ready with his creation onPaper. Then we are planning to provide him Cloth and other thingsneeded to bring the design on real.---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Inderjit Khurana , by chalking off a bit of railway platform, has created India's burgeoning "platform schools" to serve the street children who live or work nearby.

The New Idea Inderjit Khurana was founder and principal of the Ruchika Primary School in Bhubaneswar, Orissa, when she began paying special attention to the neglected children who begged for a living on the platforms of the Bhubaneswar railway station. She wished they could somehow experience the rewards of education that her own upper-class students were enjoying at Ruchika. But with their street lifestyle, these platform children would never be able to afford tuition or find access to public schools.
One Sunday morning with two cloth bags "full of fun and magic for children " and an innovative idea, Inderjit Khurana stepped onto the railway platform and began teaching. The idea was extremely simple and remarkably effective : rather than working to get children into the schools, why not just bring the school to them?
Within a few months, the "platform school," as it became known, had over 100 students sitting within its chalk-drawn boundaries, all absorbed in the song, dance, drama, music and puppetry that was helping make them literate. "We were not trying to make academics out of them," explains Inderjit. "We just wanted them to learn numeracy and language up to class III standard. Promising or hard-working children could then continue further to Class V, and the director of public instruction in Orissa agreed that a scholarship could be arranged for students who showed exceptional ability."
But as Inderjit encountered children pained by hunger, deprived of medical care, or lapsing into drug use or prostitution, she realized that one cannot educate children who are not healthy enough to learn. Education for these destitute children must be accompanied by a program of medical aid, counseling, basic job training, recreational activities, and for some even shelter. So she integrated these elements as needed into her informal educational centers and expanded into the slums. She also gradually extended her work backward from the platforms to the children in the slums and their families.
She is now expanding her work to other towns and cities along the railway line and has begun discussions with the Indian Railways to obtain access to their stations nationally.
The Problem "The railway station, normally a place of place of transit only, has become, in India, a refuge, virtually a home, for many children in the most lamentable state of destitution," explains Inderjit. "It is here that they choose to battle for life - a shrewd calculation of probability. It affords them not only ready-made shelter, but also prospects of dole-outs from the passing throngs."
International and government agencies have brought programs to the rural and tribal poor, as well as into the urban slums, according to Inderjit, but few, so far, have addressed the problems of these beggar children. For such children, neglected by parents who themselves are struggling to survive, education is not a real possibility. And the number of this class of children is increasing at an alarming rate as people migrate from rural regions into the cities in search of job opportunities that often prove elusive.
Apart from the debilitation of illiteracy, such children face other hurdles: infections and festering sores; diarrhea and dehydration; diseases such as tuberculosis and leprosy; broken bones from beatings; malnutrition; and as they grow older, drug addiction and the lure of prostitution. " We must reach boys by the age of twelve to fourteen, and girls by the age of ten," says Inderjit. "Otherwise it's too late. We've lost them."
While the children respond positively to Inderjit's educational centers, education is still perhaps the most difficult tool to give them. As they struggle to survive, their attention spans are short, and they must often choose the short-term fix making money, acquiring food, relying on drugs and dubious adults over a long-term program of self-help.
The Strategy Inderjit's strategy works because it is extremely adaptive. She follows a plan that caters entirely to the children's needs - going to them, integrating entertainment into the curriculum to attract their attention, leading field trips, using simple flashcards to teach reading, and allowing the children to come and go when they need to.
"We have a touch system," she says. "They can touch us anytime for anything they want: bathing, sleeping, eating, whatever. If we can't educate then, we can at least provide a message of cleanliness, so at least their teeth are clean, their faces washed, their hair combed. And every Saturday we bathe them ourselves."
Over the last several years her original platform in the main railway station has spawned volunteers and an increasingly comprehensive set of backup services. She now provides training courses for new workers; a drop-in shelter for abandoned, orphaned, and runaway boys eight to fourteen years old; a medical center (closed for lack of funds) three to six years old; and day care, counseling, and vocational centers- all located in the slums where they are most accessible to the children who need them.
Some of the future jobs Inderjit is targeting for the children who do not continue into formal schooling include home office lunch serving positions (as cooks and delivery boys), hotel work (as laundry men, porters, bellboys, waiters) tailoring, cooking and jobs and other income-generating schemes for slum children. Additional vocational training programs are refrigeration, plumbing, printing press operators and car repair training.
The Person Indrjit began working with children over twenty-five years ago, after she earned a diploma in early childhood and primary education. Previously she had earned a BA from Isabella Thobure College, in Lucknow. She later assisted Mother Teresa for a year in her work with destitute children.
In 1977-78, after her husband retired from the army, Inderjit began her own school, Ruchika, in Bhubaneswar, with a single student (one of her nieces). The need for primary schools was so great that her school grew rapidly to its present size of 620 students (aged three to twelve), thirty teachers and a support staff of thirty-five. She started with one platform school, but she has since added some thirty-five non-formal education centers in the slums and working areas serving children aged six to fourteen.

5th Experiment with Reforms-Samaaj-The better Part of Society

With the satisfactory work going on in the 4th experiment"Sanaath". I hereby bringforth the 5th experiment with reforms "Samaaj--The Better Part of society". This at initial stages would be a E-Newletter covering the Good and Value adding work of Individuals,Social service Organisations,NGO's, Government Servants, Elected Representatives etc.
AIM: To present a newspaper to the society which brings ONLY positive news in front of the society-i.e. The Better Part of Society
a) This will make every one feel that its not just corruption, biasness,robbery,riots and other immoral acts that are happening in the society BUT there is also a better picture which is being created by few who are among us.
b) Will Give Moral Boost up and Encouragement to the Good Work done By such Individuals and Groups
Approach: It Would be a monthly newletter featuring the individuals and groups with the work they are doing and positive impact which the society is getting. Best efforts would be there to cover up every good work done in any part of the world. I request yout to mail me with details of any such work if you observe in and around your locality or other palces at large but please ensure the authenticity .
Team: This experiment is indirect one intended to involve everyone who has a feeling to serve society but is unable to directly contribute on field due to his/her personal obligations. So i guess you can be the part of team by mailing me good work done by indivuduals or groups in your observation and forwarding the E-News Letter to all your friends so that more and more people will be able to see "Samaaj--The Better Part of Society".

4th experiment-New Developments
Hello
Warm greetings and Very Happy New year!!!!!!!!!!
Well things are going on in a nice way as i had expected a phase of
slow movement in this Experiment"Sannaath" in the orphanage at baroda will come its now on the move.
Ajay about whom i mentioned in last mail is trying out best to come up
with a good designing.But i guess he is loosing confidence ..In last two
week meeting's we have encouraged him a lot and told him that we dont
expect a great design right now just we want to see how creative he is
. This time he came up with bit positive attitude and told us "Bhaiya
i want make a good design something really different from contemporary
but for that i need to understand what all designs are existing right
now and as of now i have no exposure other than what all i have seen
here in my tailoring classes".He asked us if we can arrange a good
book of this field for which we have told him that he just needs to
tell us the name of the book and we Will get it for him.
His response is very obvious as in our cases inspite of the fact that we belong to a
well-to-do family and always have continuous moral support from
parents, friends, teachers we at such crucial times tend to loose
faith on ourselves. So i am not worried and will try to follow him up
continuously until he himself accepts the final defeat which i feel
will not come.

he is infact receiving free of cost tuition from one friend from MS
university "Deepak". But for other subjects he needs tution fees.We
have told him to just tell us the amount which he needs.I will inform
you about the same and will possibly need help in small amounts. He is
finally aiming to become a CA. Really very brilliant Boy.
Kamal about whoom i talked in last mail is also set with his career
objective. He is in 9th class right now and was deeply interested in
sports and singing. Hardik Ladva our friend of final year and
Bhavishya Sharma Second year at NIT-Surat will be guiding him for NDA,
after getting him there he can surely move on with his passion for
Sports "Cricket to be specific"--He is really a good player and may be
we have another Rajyavardhan singh rathore from him.
Yogesh--another student of 9th is superb in Singing and will be guided
by Hardik, we have set first target for him as a song in Our Cultural
Festival "Sparsh". If he really performs well on stage based upon the
feedback we will be associating him with expert.
Apart from this we are soon going to start up Interactive discussions
in English, which most of them are lagging. Luckily in last sunday's
visit we got to meet Mrs. Neeta , she is a teacher in a primary school
and she comes every weekend to distribute Snacks to kids ,and she is
ready to support us in this movement.
If everything goes on smoothly later phases will soon see Basic Computer Classes
for them.
What i personally feel is if financial support in the order of say Rs.
200-300 per month can be done by individuals on a regular monthly
basis this can make up a good fund to support the future coming needs
of the Experiment "Sanaath".
Well sometimes i feel like quitting everything but Holy Souls are
continously guiding and encouraging mails from you strenghtens up my
spirit.
Experiment is passing through the testing phase..... lets what comes
out of this ....Even if a single individual achieves to the best of his potential i would personally be very happy and contended...

My Fourth Experiment with Reforms-Sanaath-Second step
Hello
Continuing with the Mission ( described in my last mail) we visited the orphanage at Baroda this Saturday ( 9th dec).
So i thought to share with you the experiences and most importantly get valuable suggestions for some issues.
We reached there around 4 o clock in the evening and informed the Co-Ordiantor of Orphanage that we want to have a session with the kids there which will comprise of a movie. He agreed upon it and around 15 students joined us. Our basic intention was to mix up with these kids because then only they will open up and discuss freely.
Well we started with the informal talk through questions like who and is there best friend in the group present over there , what all positive qualities his friend has and so so on.. and then moved to the very important question "What they want to achieve in life in terms of career". Apart from regular education they are being offered vocational training of Tailoring, carpentry etc.. so maximum of them replied that they want to become a tailor or a Carpenter. of course that is none of there fault -that they didn't see big things ahead of them . This made us bit sad, if they had their parents they would have surely persuaded them for greater things say it engineering, medical.management etc.I don't mean that tailoring or Carpentry is a small job..but still
..Anyway this is what is our objective.to fill up the vacancy of their parents atleast for their career growth ..so the next few questions gave them a glimpse of what all is possible
We asked them did they know Sachin- in one single tone they all replied in affirmation then we asked about Amitabh bachhcan, Dr. Kalam..they all knew them.An there came the actual turning point. I asked them wont you like to become like these personalities who have made themselves world famous through their sheer dint of hard work and utilising their hidden talent . This question made maximum of them to sit quietly and think.
We told them that now we will show them a movie "Iqbal" and they after the movie they have to tell me how the character Iqbal in movie shapes his destiny...
You all will be surprised to know that meanwhile around 40 students joined us. And they all enjoyed the movie.
Aftermath effect- We feel movie left an everlasting impression on their heart. They all very jovially explained the message of movie and asked us
"Bhaiya humbhi kuch aisa karna chahate hain-par jaisa iqbal ne kiya par kaise karen"-- This question made us over joyous..we realised our approach was working.
In reply we told them to sit for half an hour tonight with a paper and a pen and write down their dream-What they want to become as per there own self belief of qualities which they have. Then we instructed them to write down their approach i mean how they think they can move towards their dream, what all things they will need, what all are the possible obstacles that might creep in....
All of them said in one voice "Bhaiya hum raat me khana khane ke badd jaroor karenge' We told them to discuss things with their Friends over there and be ready with what all they can and possibly on 16 DEC( Saturday) we will be there at same time ( 4 p..m) and will have a counselling session for each individual to refine out their plan and assured them that all possible help would be there from our end to make their dream true .
But the real task lies ahead of this for which we need your help
1) If you can spare time on 16th Dec and can join the counselling session to ensure proper formulation of plans it would be really a great help. Ofcourse we have our team here, but still... i feel ur experience will be a great support for us.
2) But still if personal presence is not possible- mail me your feelings what all we should keep in mind in the counselling session.. say how to judge their true potential through a set of questionnaire ...how to guide and refine out the plan made by them.
3)As mentioned in my earlier mail i want specific talents to be associated with the field expert to nurture their talent in that direction and make them achieve something really big . So for this i need
3 a) if u know any such experts in Baroda or nearby Baroda say it for music, painting, computer skills, sports etc please mail me their contact address and numbers -- as per the interest and talent of student we will try to associate the interested kids with them. see they all are in the ripe age of dvelopment and any support at this age is going to make wondreful results.
3 b) if not now but at later stages for fulfledged development of talent we need to invest a lot--so if u can guide me to arrange possible philanthropic sources say it charitable trusts, companies, individuals etc who can take up say one or two kids as full responsibility in terms of funding--
It will be really great to get if you with your two-three friends can join can take resposnsibilty of any of the kids for financial support. in for nuruturing their talent

Well i am very hopeful with this Experiment and if the approach works well this would be extended to other orphanages too ..
So second step is over and now most Crucial-Third step is going to begin --i will waiting for the kind mails and suggestions to make the third step work

My Fourth Experiment With Reforms-Sanaath
Dear All
Well on 29th of November ( Wednesday) we all started our first mission of social service in Baroda.
So i thought to share with all of you the experience of the same
Its an orphanage near Rhino Circle, with a total strength of 94 children ranging from 4th class to 12th class students.This was first time in my life i ever visited an orphanage-the home of those few unlucky kids who have lost their most precious gift of mother nature-PARENTS. Well to my surprise the orphanage was well maintained with a hostel , mess-cum TV room , their classrooms, a carpentry shop and few other traditional learning job learning shops for them.
The Co-ordinator of the orphanage was very supportive , just one big problem we faced and that was of communication --We are not well conversant with Gujarati and Co-ordinator of the orphanage didn't understand Hindi well. But i feel gradually this can be resolved out.
Our AIM:-
With a firm belief on one basic philosophy that if Nature snatches some thing from us he surely gives some thing in place of that and in case of orphans the most precious gift Parents have been taken away so its for sure that they must be blessed with some thing very extra-ordinary . Now our aim to diagnose that Hidden talent and nurture them in that particular direction so as to get Next_Gen- Tansen, Leanardo da Vinci, Sachin, Kishore Kumar...etc the Talented Persons. ofcourse they will continue with their regular studies
Approach:
So in order to find out the talent its imperative that we must intermingle with these kids and gradually try to find out whats special in them. So for this through various small steps say through inspiring movies , small games, quizzes etc we have planned to move and our major step will be their counselling session in which we will prepare the complete Plan for their future growth in the area of the Talent.
After this complete planning phase possible comes the most important thing-the
IMPLEMENTATION -
What i have thought of is if we can associate these kids say some one is having good voice with an expert of singing and funds be diverted over his/ her development in this particular field we Will be soon able to ensure this talent being nurtured up and if every thing goes right we will get Jewels for Humanity with superb creativity in their domain.
Now tomorrow ( 9/12/06) ( Saturday) we are going there with three-four members , our plan for tomorrow is to start the interaction with them through a movie and after much deliberation we have finalised movie "Iqbaal" and then we will have informal chit-chat session with them.For removing out the barrier of language our team will comprise of Mr. Harit- first yearite (he is fluent in gujarati and also he is working with great devotion in Surat's orphanages)
Lets hope for the best.....

Well on 29th of November ( Wednesday) we all started our first mission of social service in Baroda.
So i thought to share with all of you the experience of the same
Its an orphanage near Rhino Circle, with a total strength of 94 children ranging from 4th class to 12th class students.This was first time in my life i ever visited an orphanage-the home of those few unlucky kids who have lost their most precious gift of mother nature-PARENTS. Well to my surprise the orphanage was well maintained with a hostel , mess-cum TV room , their classrooms, a carpentry shop and few other traditional learning job learning shops for them.
The Co-ordinator of the orphanage was very supportive , just one big problem we faced and that was of communication --We are not well conversant with Gujarati and Co-ordinator of the orphanage didn't understand Hindi well. But i feel gradually this can be resolved out.
Our AIM:-
With a firm belief on one basic philosophy that if Nature snatches some thing from us he surely gives some thing in place of that and in case of orphans the most precious gift Parents have been taken away so its for sure that they must be blessed with some thing very extra-ordinary . Now our aim to diagnose that Hidden talent and nurture them in that particular direction so as to get Next_Gen- Tansen, Leanardo da Vinci, Sachin, Kishore Kumar...etc the Talented Persons. ofcourse they will continue with their regular studies
Approach:
So in order to find out the talent its imperative that we must intermingle with these kids and gradually try to find out whats special in them. So for this through various small steps say through inspiring movies , small games, quizzes etc we have planned to move and our major step will be their counselling session in which we will prepare the complete Plan for their future growth in the area of the Talent.
After this complete planning phase possible comes the most important thing-the

My First Experiment With Reforms-Drishti
What Is Drishti
Its not just any other organization or society or committee of SVNIT which exists for its own existence, rather its existence is for making NIT-Surat a Brand . Individuals will come and go but organization must survive to achieve the goal and as a member of first team of Drishti we have ensured that the dream organization works as team of Visionaries with Ethics and integrity as binding principles. I would prefer that organization is dissolved than see corruption and Biasness creeping in its roots. Flexibility is the inherent part of the Society to ensure the Creative minds best potential utilization.
Founded By my mentor Ashish Sharma Sir ( Few of those Visionaries i have met till date) with a dream to create a new Environment supportive for achieving Technical Excellence.
Well it was 11th June 2004 when Ashish Sir handed over the responsibility of Drishti to our novice shoulders. We had the name Drishti and Vision of Ashish Sir and with this began the Herculean task of starting the organization from Scratch leading to the establishment of Drishti Lab ( In ADM-3-now its place is changed to bank Building) , persuading people to join the mission for development of SVNIT, persuading the administration for providing Official Status and much needed Funds.
First Team of Drishti
Drishti (My first experiment with reforms) began with the team of highly supportive visionaries Pranav, Prasanna, Gaurav, Parthav, Sarat, Partha, Mohit , Shailesh , Abhai, Sripad, Aakash, Manmay... to name a few.
It was very humble beginning and most arduous task was to convince people that this team is going to revolutionize our beloved institute and to our great surprise around 450+ students believed in our words and became first member of the organization.
The Path
1) Spreading Awareness about the Tech-Things like Techfests, KVPY, Robocon, Different Scholarships, Student related Projects--Through Various Public Notices, Seminars, Workshops, One-to One discussions
2) Helping Students By providing them best possible Tech Support from Seniors and Profs. and Project Material requirement through Drishti Lab
3) Organizing Pre-Events to make students work error-free and competitive enough for winning prizes at National and International Events.
Well to quote history Drishti -Lab was inaugurated on 6th October 2004 by our former director Dr.A.K Dave Sir and Supported by First faculty Advisor Dr.H.B.Naik Sir, the most important date we feel for this Dream organization.
The Goal
Dream which you all have to fulfill through your genuine and sincere Efforts. By 2011 our beloved institute will complete its 50 years and we have this small period in hand to march towards path of Excellence which leads to just one Goal NIT-Surat a brand.
And of course mission will move forward even after this period
I have firm belief you have the Guts, you have the Talent and now you have Drishti team to Support you in all your endeavors--Make the Dream Come true
