Gandhi-Mahatma or a common man...An ideal for IRMAN's

“Gandhi” Mahatma or a Common Man

‘Gandhi’- I believe is one word which almost every one of us have heard right from our childhood. Often defined as a great charismatic personality, leader of the then thirty three crore Indians and most importantly “Father of the Nation”; the Nation which happens to be the largest democracy of the world.

Lets see bit closely how far things hold true and if they; how it all happened?

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, was a below average student. He was so shy that immediately after the school bell rang, he straight way ran back to home so as to avoid communication with his colleagues. As a professional, he can possibly be not called successful. After first round table conference, Lord Irwin told press people that if “I was not told in advance that the man sitting before me was ‘Mahatma Gandhi’ I would have never believed that the meek man wearing loin cloth moved thirty three crore population”. As a speaker he never used voice fluctuations and other tone changes which good speakers have. Thus this indicates that he was neither a great scholar as a student, nor a successful professional as a lawyer, nor a voracious speaker as leader and neither his physique was charismatic.

Surprising isn’t it? Some obvious questions appear in our mind

  • Were thirty three crore people at that time fool, who had virtually assumed him as their leader?

  • How presence of noble patriotic people like SubashChandra, Bhagat Singh, Lala Lajpat Rai, Bal Gangadhra Tilak, C.R. Das etc couldn’t downsize his stature?

  • How and why did youths ( so-called Hot Blood ) followed his non-violence path when they had several ideal and renowned leaders in the path of violent means of gaining freedom?

Questions bit puzzling but worth pondering because answers to these questions have hidden meaning specially for us- IRMAN’s.

I searched for the answer in almost every accessible and reliable literature most important being twenty two volumes of “Works of Mahatma Gandhi” and could conclude that –
In the entire history of human civilization probably first time GOD or ISHWAR or ALLAH made a man who was neither ‘Maryada Puroshottam- Ram’ nor ‘Messenger of God – Paigambar’ nor ‘Son of God- Jesus’ neither attained ‘Nirvana – Budhdha’.
but was a “A man coming from the same very common mass which most Indians belonged that time, spoke the way in which common mass spoke, wore what common mass that time could afford to wear, lived like common mass away from luxurious boarding, traveled in third class which common mass used…, - In short a Common Man”.
It was his commonness which appealed the mass.

  • First time in history people belonging to remotest and backward places of India, belonging to most weaker sections of the society got a person to lead them who was common like them and claimed to give them ‘Swaraj ’ without using any big army and arm equipments which they didn’t had.

  • First time someone used the so-presumed weakness of Indians “Sab chalta hai” i.e. passivity in a constructive sense ‘We will not retaliate the violence of Britishers’.

  • First time someone showed how we can defeat our enemy without hurting him.

  • First time someone showed that mightiest superpower of the world can be challenged by an ordinary villager living in the remotest corner of the country who is neither literate, nor rich, neither has arms to fight by using just ‘Asahyog’ i.e. Non-Cooperation.

Gandhi never claimed SUPERHUMANSHIP ‘The Mahatma tag he disliked most’. He used the conventional noble tools which we Indians had right from the beginning of our civilization – “Truth and Non-Violence”.
What differentiated him from all the leaders that time was his ground rooted ness among the masses. We often tend to ignore his philosophies under the pretext of the fact that ‘He was Mahatma so he could do it, but we aren’t’. This ground rooted ness has similarity with us ‘The Barefoot Mangers’

Purpose of discussing about Gandhi is to reiterate:-
It doesn’t need a charismatic person to do something worthwhile, it just needs willingness and perseverance to fight and change. What Dr. Kurien did and what possibly he and Professors here at IRMA expect from us “Potential Rural Managers” [This is how Prof. Raju often address us !!] to do for facilitating the unprivileged mass to achieve best out of their potential. Although Gandhi never had a privilege to study in IRMA and learn so systematically the ways of doing development, we are probably more lucky as Participants of the Institute which is Best in Asia for Rural Development cum Management Program. Now how we do it depends upon us. I don’t intend to force upon [after all who am I to do so !] everyone to join development sector or become a ‘Mahatma’. But I just want every one of us to do which a ‘Common Gandhi’ within us can do for the society.

  • Let me give an example. A newspaper article read ‘Son of a labor died in government hospital because of malaria’. I was astonished reading this. On further enquiry I got to know that doctor’s and nurses there had sold the medicines given by government and that labor couldn’t afford to purchase medicines from the market. How pathetic isn’t it?
    · There is widespread corruption, we can’t help it.
    · There is so much poverty , we can’t help it
    · Politicians, bureaucrats and government officials are inefficient, we can’t help it.
    · There is problem everywhere in the system, we can’t help it

  • Yes we can’t after all who we are? We are not Prime Minister of India and even he is unable to do it !!! . But there remains a lot which we can do.
I presume everyone of us will be getting a salary of 20-25k after passing out from IRMA . What we can do is
    · Visit any government hospital say in a month, we are sure to find a person like the labor mentioned above, it just needs Rs.200-250 medicine to avoid such bad incidents. This will first of all save space of every newspaper because one less negative news will be written. So a first step towards removing the common feeling “Jamana Bigad Raha Hai” will be taken. Secondly the person who got help from you will in future always be grateful and willing to help other needy persons. A small Chain reaction will start .Isn’t it?
    · Give some of your valuable time to an orphanage, teach kids over there, play with them. This will make few moments of their life sing a beautiful song. A small help but a big support isn’t it?
    · Visit an Old-age home, physically challenged home and all such places where comparatively less privileged masses live and lend them a small help.
    · Contribute with an open hand in case of natural calamities.
    · And Finally best would be as believed in mission of IRMA, would be joining the development sector and contributing fully. Best Step isn’t it? !!!!!!

Decision is all ours. Need of the hour is not so-presumed Mahatma Gandhi but a Common Gandhi which every one of us [at least we grass rooted IRMAN’s] have in heart. Let’s bring out the Common Gandhi or a modern day ‘Barefoot Manager’. And as in IRMA we proudly say
If we won’t? … Who will?

PS- No offence meant to any religion or religious leaders; in the comparison which I used in the article.

Summary of experiences of the Tribal Village of Jharkhand

Finally time has come to leave the village "Supa" of Ghumla Dist. Initial few days seemed like we have been placed in some great torture..living for two months without electricity (forget other basic amenities).
But it seems this is wat taught me most. For me it was just a matter of two months for them its a matter of whole life if someone among us doesn't come and nvolve in development work.
1)Most of the kids used to eat in a bowl which was supposed to be full of rice but it had moew of white water known as "Madh" ( it was done by the parents intentionally because they had very less of it to feed them). and this is not the case for a day or two..its for 6-7 months. Only the period when they harvest rice they eat full stomach.... Virtual Starvation
2) Yearly income of most of the family's do not cross 12000.. (surprised !! we can't live even if we get this as one month salary which they are earning as yearly sum)( this is 4 times less than wat govt has kept the BPL-Belw Povery Limit
3)People still depend on the local Vaidya as primary health facility never reached there..and that too becomes highly critical if someone falls ill after 6p.m. ( Hospital is 55 KM..an to get a vehicle to carry the patient u need to go 8 km uptil block..and getting a vehicle is also difficult in evening hours because of fear of MCC--naxal group active there) (one will have to die if he/she falls seriosuly ill in evening hours
4) From 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. village seems to be drowned in darkness..( just try to feeel how difficult the situation will be if we had to live like this)..implying no possblity of education for kids during night hours..and if u think that govt gives kerosene for lightening purpose u r probably right..be as per provisons each family get 4litres a month which i guess is very less fr average family size of 10) (Rule of darkness
5) Villagers always remain in fear of the Naxal group (virtual Civil war)--
..
......
...................
In short ........................................................

I got the real feel of the words which earlier i wrote on my orkut profile.

To quote
Common man- Destined for Social Service
I am among few lucky people of the world who are blessed with world's most precious wealth- Parents
I woke up this morning with more health than illness..........I am more blessed than the million who will not survive this week.
I have never experienced the danger of battle, the loneliness of imprisonment, the agony of torture, or the pangs of starvation.......I am ahead of 500 million people in the world.
I have food in the refrigerator, clothes on my back, a roof overhead and a place to sleep...I am richer than 75% of this world.
I have money in the bank, in my wallet, and spare change in a dish someplace....... I among the top 8% of the world's wealthy.
I hold up my head with a smile on my face and am truly thankful.....I am blessed because the majority can, but most do not.
I prayed yesterday and today........I am among few lucky people because I believe God does hear and answer prayers.
Now since I wrote all this, I am more blessed than over two billion people in the world that cannot read at all.
For all these Blessings of Almighty will try to express my gratitude by serving those who don't have this Blessed Richness .
Common man- Destined for Social Service
.
I guess this real grass root experiential (word very fondly used by our Prof's at IRMA) learning will make me a more dedicated servant of Society.

PS: I didnt intend to show the negative picture --aim is that few more people who read it may join the mission to add value to life of these unpriviledged.

Hello
Journey of experiment with reforms began with "Drishti" and now next experiment is about to shape up.With God's Grace "Disha" a mission for socio-economic development of unpriviledge sections of the society is going to be registered in next few days.Disha as a whole will be begning its operation as two fold organisations.
1) Disha- A Social Enterprise- which will be registered under Indian companies act 1956.It will be a profit making venture dealing with handicrafts. Being Social enterprise parallely it will be distributing a part of profit to the artisans who are currently being exploited by middle men. Remaining part of the profit will be diverted to the second arm of Disha-the development agency. Need for establishment of the arm- Social Enterprise was felt as NGO/development agencies which are dependent upon external funding fully usually face fund crises and thereby development work takes a back seat and sustainability of the organisation becomes the top priority. So This Social enterprise will be the direct and dependable source of funding for development wing of Disha.
2) Disha- A development agency wil be registered as under Indian SOciety act 1860 and will be a development agency cum NGO. Intially we are targetting four comapritively poorer states of India- Bihar,Jharkhand,Chattishgarh and Orissa. Working would be based at Ranchi. Major work areas would be microfinance, education, Model Village development, child beggar issue, orphans and at later phases would be diversifying the areas.
As on date we are team of three people with Suman Kumar and Shashank Pandey. We will be in need of great moral support from your end.
If Every thing goes fine Disha will soon become a catalyst to support the development of millions.

If Poverty could say that it has any other exremity beyond this i would be really amazed..Supa the village where we have been offered a two months village stay in Jhakrkhand is having population which is morethan 98% below poverty line...implying annual income doesnt cross the basic limit of 50k for these families. there are around 12 handpumps in the village but surprisingy just two are functional.. add to more sadness soil here is full of sand not suitable for cultivation..most of the time these people move out for migration to nearby states where they get inhuman treatment...
Electricity never reached village..after 6 p.m. whole village is swallowed by the darkness..none of the houses ever saw brick .cement combination..implying all kutchcta houses..
barely these people manage their two square meals and that too includes rice and potato s lunch as well as dinner..
for us its just a matter of two months ..and as expected we are eagerly waiting when this two months period will end but for them its story for lifetime unless and untill someone comes and puts his/her hand to improve upon the conditions.
Here i could reaize how rich we are...the top 8% rich population of thwe world

First week Experience in trbal village in Ranchi 1st oct-7oct 2007

Jharkhand known as Sudan of India, is the state which has been allocated to me for my two months field stay as a part of Curriculum at IRMA. Village "Supa" where i have to witness and have an experiential learning of grass root realities is in Ghumla Dist. Today we are leaving for there. GVT-Gramin Vikas Trust is the NGO which is actively functional in the area for the development of the unprivileged mass here and luckily it is our host organisation. Village as expected , doesnt have any pucca houses and electricity. So i guess it will be really an unforgettable period specially for we so called urbanites. Moreover few Naxal groups are highly active here, but as per GVT they fight only with Police and Politicians. I am expecting an entirely different culture over here as this part of the country i am visiting for the first time. With me is another partipant from IRMA - Suman kumar. More updates i will be putting weekly.

War & Peace

Why and how much blood you will drain ?
How you will sleep when humanity will disdain ?

No-one knows how many wars have been fought
One race attacked the other what they sought
No-one knows how many flags have been hoisted
O’ Callous how many tearful eyes you have left
No won has ever won the war none will triumph ever
Just dance of death will blossom forever
Here or across the frontier only hearts will whimper
In this game of death only dead bodies will slumber

Be it you or your rival
Are both not the flowers of same soil
If on your death your mother will cry
do you think mother of other on his demise will laugh with joy
By seeing those eyes weeping
I can’t stop myself from crying
So again I repeat with pain

Why and how much blood you will drain?
How you will sleep when humanity will disdain ?

My Birthday Gift

My Birthday Gift

I had a dream on my birthday
I was made the king on this day
Just a wish and everything was made available
The scene was all very delightful
With an army of servants at my helm

All comforts, respect no unfilled wish ever surpass
Nothing more I could think of I didn’t encompass

I had a dream on my birthday

I was made king on this day.

Days and months passed happily living such a luxurious life
One day I came out of my palace for a walk

To glimpse all natural beauty of cold dusk
Walked about just a mile

From a hut heard a groaning howl
Peeped in and found a child was crying
Besides him dead body of his parents lying
The poor child was now an orphan
With no one left to hold him on
But I overlooked it and took some quick stroll.

So that I can make myself aloof of that snivel
At the corner of the street an old man was sitting
With a torn blanket in this bitter cold and shivering

As usual my heart turned away itself from his pain
Leaving him to his fate I moved again

I had a dream on my birthday
I was made king on this day.

Moved on and on seeing across the country
Saw people without two square meals a day
Suffering from different diseases with no money for medicine

But still I turned up my eyes form this scene
And explained my mind
In my life I have a fully pleasant wind
Why should I be worried my life is so pleasant?

I had a dream on my birthday

I was made king on that day.

I returned back to my palace
My mother came hurriedly with solace
Asked very affectionately where I had gone

that child came in front of my eye who was now an orphan
who will give him this motherly affection?
For me Was now a pertinent question
Mother brought food on an ornamental plate

I moved my hand to plate for that delicious intake
But saw those hungry faces crying for victuals

Requested my mom for the plate removal

I had a dream on my birthday

I was made king on this day

My mother got worried with this stealth in my health
Called a doctor with his brigade
Doctor examined and gave few tablets as remedy

I saw that person’s face suffering with disease
On the surface of the tablet but any way I took it
My mom told me to go for sleep and agreed happily

In that well cushioned bed with a fur coated blanket
I stepped in but saw the face of that shivering man

I had a dream on my birthday

I was made king on my birthday

All these comforts couldn’t give me any sense of pleasure
Those sufferings, those weeps, that pain all was dancing in front of my eyes
That child, that old man, that shivering person came in front of me
I asked myself
Just because my father had such a big empire I have such comforts

Just because I have my parents alive so I should not bother for those orphans
Or just because I belong to rich family
I should not bother in this bitter cold for those shivering persons

I had a dream on my birthday
I was made king on this day

No I will never like to be at such a position
Where I cannot feel and help millions suffering
Suddenly I woke up from my sleep
My mother was besides with a cheerful “happy birthday” wish
And my friends all around
And my father came with a grand gift with colourful paper bound

I opened it happily; I found my favourite book with a note
This note was a birthday wish from my father
It read may my son become “king of the kings of this world” forever

I had a dream on my birthday

I was made king on this day.

Along with your Bday wishes, I need your help. Will you help me in realizing this dream. Little steps have started in Mayurbhanj District of Orissa. We sincerely need your support for carrying things forward ,Please support us. You may read more about the experiment here  http://www.coit.in/cexperiment.html

1) Mehul- the 11th class commerce student at the orphanage is financedby my very close friend Trinadh who is currently working in Amdocs InCyprus and now he has started his Tuition's. He is aiming to shape hiscareer as C.A. Moreover as a matter of gratitude he has promised methat on saturdays from 2-4 P.M. he would be teaching English to thejunior kids over there ( we would assist him during these classes).

2) Ajay-The most promising face which i had observed in that orphanage-the boy who is highly creative and good at designing clothes -- wastill date unable to come forward. On Saturday he came along with meand we purchased a good book of fashion Designing which he thoughtwould help him in shaping his career. I cant define the happinesswhich was present on his face after getting that book. I firmlybelieve this coming Saturday he would be ready with his creation onPaper. Then we are planning to provide him Cloth and other thingsneeded to bring the design on real.---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Project Message
If the child cannot come to the school, then the school must come to the child.- Inderjit Khurana, Ruchika Social Service Organisation

Inderjit Khurana , by chalking off a bit of railway platform, has created India's burgeoning "platform schools" to serve the street children who live or work nearby.
The New Idea
The Problem
The Strategy
The Person
The New Idea Inderjit Khurana was founder and principal of the Ruchika Primary School in Bhubaneswar, Orissa, when she began paying special attention to the neglected children who begged for a living on the platforms of the Bhubaneswar railway station. She wished they could somehow experience the rewards of education that her own upper-class students were enjoying at Ruchika. But with their street lifestyle, these platform children would never be able to afford tuition or find access to public schools.
One Sunday morning with two cloth bags "full of fun and magic for children " and an innovative idea, Inderjit Khurana stepped onto the railway platform and began teaching. The idea was extremely simple and remarkably effective : rather than working to get children into the schools, why not just bring the school to them?
Within a few months, the "platform school," as it became known, had over 100 students sitting within its chalk-drawn boundaries, all absorbed in the song, dance, drama, music and puppetry that was helping make them literate. "We were not trying to make academics out of them," explains Inderjit. "We just wanted them to learn numeracy and language up to class III standard. Promising or hard-working children could then continue further to Class V, and the director of public instruction in Orissa agreed that a scholarship could be arranged for students who showed exceptional ability."
But as Inderjit encountered children pained by hunger, deprived of medical care, or lapsing into drug use or prostitution, she realized that one cannot educate children who are not healthy enough to learn. Education for these destitute children must be accompanied by a program of medical aid, counseling, basic job training, recreational activities, and for some even shelter. So she integrated these elements as needed into her informal educational centers and expanded into the slums. She also gradually extended her work backward from the platforms to the children in the slums and their families.
She is now expanding her work to other towns and cities along the railway line and has begun discussions with the Indian Railways to obtain access to their stations nationally.
The Problem "The railway station, normally a place of place of transit only, has become, in India, a refuge, virtually a home, for many children in the most lamentable state of destitution," explains Inderjit. "It is here that they choose to battle for life - a shrewd calculation of probability. It affords them not only ready-made shelter, but also prospects of dole-outs from the passing throngs."
International and government agencies have brought programs to the rural and tribal poor, as well as into the urban slums, according to Inderjit, but few, so far, have addressed the problems of these beggar children. For such children, neglected by parents who themselves are struggling to survive, education is not a real possibility. And the number of this class of children is increasing at an alarming rate as people migrate from rural regions into the cities in search of job opportunities that often prove elusive.
Apart from the debilitation of illiteracy, such children face other hurdles: infections and festering sores; diarrhea and dehydration; diseases such as tuberculosis and leprosy; broken bones from beatings; malnutrition; and as they grow older, drug addiction and the lure of prostitution. " We must reach boys by the age of twelve to fourteen, and girls by the age of ten," says Inderjit. "Otherwise it's too late. We've lost them."
While the children respond positively to Inderjit's educational centers, education is still perhaps the most difficult tool to give them. As they struggle to survive, their attention spans are short, and they must often choose the short-term fix making money, acquiring food, relying on drugs and dubious adults over a long-term program of self-help.

The Strategy Inderjit's strategy works because it is extremely adaptive. She follows a plan that caters entirely to the children's needs - going to them, integrating entertainment into the curriculum to attract their attention, leading field trips, using simple flashcards to teach reading, and allowing the children to come and go when they need to.
"We have a touch system," she says. "They can touch us anytime for anything they want: bathing, sleeping, eating, whatever. If we can't educate then, we can at least provide a message of cleanliness, so at least their teeth are clean, their faces washed, their hair combed. And every Saturday we bathe them ourselves."
Over the last several years her original platform in the main railway station has spawned volunteers and an increasingly comprehensive set of backup services. She now provides training courses for new workers; a drop-in shelter for abandoned, orphaned, and runaway boys eight to fourteen years old; a medical center (closed for lack of funds) three to six years old; and day care, counseling, and vocational centers- all located in the slums where they are most accessible to the children who need them.
Some of the future jobs Inderjit is targeting for the children who do not continue into formal schooling include home office lunch serving positions (as cooks and delivery boys), hotel work (as laundry men, porters, bellboys, waiters) tailoring, cooking and jobs and other income-generating schemes for slum children. Additional vocational training programs are refrigeration, plumbing, printing press operators and car repair training.

The Person Indrjit began working with children over twenty-five years ago, after she earned a diploma in early childhood and primary education. Previously she had earned a BA from Isabella Thobure College, in Lucknow. She later assisted Mother Teresa for a year in her work with destitute children.
In 1977-78, after her husband retired from the army, Inderjit began her own school, Ruchika, in Bhubaneswar, with a single student (one of her nieces). The need for primary schools was so great that her school grew rapidly to its present size of 620 students (aged three to twelve), thirty teachers and a support staff of thirty-five. She started with one platform school, but she has since added some thirty-five non-formal education centers in the slums and working areas serving children aged six to fourteen.

4th experiment-New Developments

Hello
Warm greetings and Very Happy New year!!!!!!!!!!

Well things are going on in a nice way as i had expected a phase of
slow movement in this Experiment"Sannaath" in the orphanage at baroda will come its now on the move.

Ajay about whom i mentioned in last mail is trying out best to come up
with a good designing. But i guess he is loosing confidence ..In last two
week meeting's we have encouraged him a lot and told him that we dont
expect a great design right now just we want to see how creative he is
. This time he came up with bit positive attitude and told us "Bhaiya
i want make a good design something really different from contemporary
but for that i need to understand what all designs are existing right
now and as of now i have no exposure other than what all i have seen
here in my tailoring classes".He asked us if we can arrange a good
book of this field for which we have told him that he just needs to
tell us the name of the book and we Will get it for him.

His response is very obvious as in our cases inspite of the fact that we belong to a
well-to-do family and always have continuous moral support from
parents, friends, teachers we at such crucial times tend to loose
faith on ourselves. So i am not worried and will try to follow him up
continuously until he himself accepts the final defeat which i feel
will not come.

Mehul, a student of 11th class , commerce , is very good at studies,
he is infact receiving free of cost tuition from one friend from MS
university "Deepak". But for other subjects he needs tution fees.We
have told him to just tell us the amount which he needs.I will inform
you about the same and will possibly need help in small amounts. He is
finally aiming to become a CA. Really very brilliant Boy.

Kamal about whoom i talked in last mail is also set with his career
objective. He is in 9th class right now and was deeply interested in
sports and singing. Hardik Ladva our friend of final year and
Bhavishya Sharma Second year at NIT-Surat will be guiding him for NDA,
after getting him there he can surely move on with his passion for
Sports "Cricket to be specific"--He is really a good player and may be
we have another Rajyavardhan singh rathore from him.

Yogesh--another student of 9th is superb in Singing and will be guided
by Hardik, we have set first target for him as a song in Our Cultural
Festival "Sparsh". If he really performs well on stage based upon the
feedback we will be associating him with expert.

Apart from this we are soon going to start up Interactive discussions
in English, which most of them are lagging. Luckily in last sunday's
visit we got to meet Mrs. Neeta , she is a teacher in a primary school
and she comes every weekend to distribute Snacks to kids ,and she is
ready to support us in this movement.

If everything goes on smoothly later phases will soon see Basic Computer Classes
for them.

What i personally feel is if financial support in the order of say Rs.
200-300 per month can be done by individuals on a regular monthly
basis this can make up a good fund to support the future coming needs
of the Experiment "Sanaath".

Well sometimes i feel like quitting everything but Holy Souls are
continously guiding and encouraging mails from you strenghtens up my
spirit.

Experiment is passing through the testing phase..... lets what comes
out of this ....Even if a single individual achieves to the best of his potential i would personally be very happy and contended...
